Trust precedes truth*

People say

Trust should be earned

Like stars on a plaque

I think it’s a given

Guarded by pact

And once that pact is broken

You’ll never get it back

At least not easily

As forgiveness is different

To diving for traps

Since chances are given

At the mercy of the betrayed

You’d think

The wisest defence

Would be protection sustained

Yet it seems to be

That tables can be turned

It’s not always the case

That chances are given

To those concerned

I thought benefit of doubt

Takes a lot of strength

Until I realised

Hopelessness creates

Even more stress

So in comparison

Blindness needs no breaks

But make no mistake

Leaps are still significant

And difficult to take

If you think about it

Blindness has to be the source of faith

For you don’t know

Whether someone will catch you

Your first falling fate

It’s interesting to me

That one betrayal trumps all greats

But no one ever questions

Whether the wall of fortification

Is too much hate

Indeed

Its bricks

Are cemented with blood

Lingering heartache

And pain, too much

Yet if we realise that

The first fall must start with faith

Only the ones that follow

Build a record of reason

Tracking to date

Will we be more inclined

To clear the slate

So we can inject meaning

Back into words

And restore good faith
